West Nile virus is typically spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Luckily, you cannot “catch” West Nile virus through casual contact such as touching or kissing a person with the virus.
Infected mosquitoes have been identified recently in my community, so now is the perfect time to let my friends and neighbors know that they can feel safe, even though West Nile virus is a potentially serious illness.
By avoiding mosquito bites, you give yourself the best chance of avoiding the virus. And you can avoid those bites by using an insect repellant.
Our toxin-free repellant blend is a proprietary blend of 15 essential oils, which not only smell really good, but are scientifically shown to act as powerful repellents to biting insects. The 15 include:
- Lemon
- Eucalyptus
- Citronella
- Lemongrass
Symptoms of West Nile virus
About one in 150 people infected with West Nile virus will develop severe illness. The severe symptoms may include a high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may even be permanent.
Symptoms on milder cases can include fever, headache, and body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back. Symptoms can last for a few days, though even healthy people have reported feeling ill for several weeks.
Approximately 80 percent of people who are infected with West Nile virus will show no symptoms at all.
How to use the repellant blend
You can apply the essential oil blend directly to the body from the bottle. Some people find they get better coverage if they switch out the “limiter” (plastic insert that allows the product to drip) for a spray top.
