Some people see flaky skin on their scalp as a distraction, but if you have angry, red, itchy, flaky skin, it’s way more than just a distraction. It could be seborrheic dermatitis.
What is this irritating skin disorder?
The first important thing to note is that it is not harmful to the body. Just darned inconvenient! Scaling, or crusting, on the scalp can also spread to the eyebrows, nose, ears, and chest. A mild irritation may appear as small white flakes, but more severe cases cause crusts, scabs, redness, plaque, thickened skin, or a combination of any of those conditions.
What causes this irritation?
The cause is not known, however certain immune disorders (such as HIV/Aids), neurological disorders (such a Parkinson’s syndrome), alcoholism, depression, acne, rosacea, psoriasis, stress, pregnancy, puberty, and oily skin can all be contributing factors.
How do I control seborrheic dermatitis?
Although poor personal hygiene does not cause this condition, good personal hygiene is a great start at controlling it! If you have an underlying medical condition that causes your skin to be irritated, it is important to address that problem first.
Never pull the scale off your skin or scalp. This can cause infection, and noticeable hair loss.
Coconut oil can be a huge help in controlling any skin flakiness of the scalp. Try melting about a tablespoon of coconut oil and applying it to your scalp. Put on a shower cap and allow the oil to do its thing for about an hour or so, then wash and condition your hair as normal. If you do this twice a week, you should see great results!
I suffered from this almost every summer. I think it was worse during the warmer months because of the heat causing excess perspiration, which in turn caused excess oil production on my scalp.
I used the coconut oil protocol, adding about 4 drops of Geranium essential oil to the coconut oil, and the results are great! Geranium is known to have a balancing effect on sebum production, helps to sooth irritation, and it just smells good!
