August is Psoriasis Awareness Month – yes, we’re back to looking at skin again!
Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune disease that appears on the skin. It occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that speed up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis is not contagious.
There are five types of psoriasis. The most common form, plaque psoriasis, appears as raised, red patches covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells. Psoriasis can occur on any part of the body and is associated with other serious health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and depression.
Psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the U.S. As many as 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis.

We know that there is help when it comes to supporting our immune system with essential oils. We have spoken about supporting all our body systems from the inside, which typically means starting with a healthy regime of vitamins and minerals.
Once you know you are doing all you can for your health on a cellular level, it’s time to look at specific body systems. It’s the immune system’s job to protect your body from disease. A healthy immune system produces antibodies that attack anything that is harmful, such as bacteria, toxins, cancer cells, viruses, etc. An autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue.
Support for the immune system that has already been compromised would help to reduce any symptoms, and help bring the body into a state of homeostasis (where the healthy body is able to defend itself against disease.)
This condition, in most cases, produces patches of red, inflamed skin that become scaly and flake off, or crack, leaving painful sores and cracks in the skin. Many times, these lesions are caused while the body is in a state of healing, as it works to eliminate toxins from the body.
What oils can help my psoriasis?
Some essential oils that may help during an outbreak are:
- Lavender, to relieve itching.
- Geranium, Frankincense, Helichrysum, and Myrrh, to support, soothe and help to repair the skin.
- Melaleuca, or Oregano (blended with a carrier oil) for infection.
- A nice, healthy slathering of extra virgin coconut oil, which is so beneficial for the skin!
You can also use Melissa to support recovery from psoriasis (also helpful for eczema and dermatitis) diluted up to 1:5 with coconut oil. Melissa can calm the inflammation that contributes to redness, swelling and itchiness, and it stimulates the metabolism, and tones and enlivens the skin.
I know that many times it can make your skin feel a whole lot better if you just have a good, old-fashioned soak in the tub! If you choose that route, why not whip up this great recipe for psoriasis-soothing bath salts!
Soothing Psoriasis Bath:
- 2 Cups Epsom Salts
- Bergamot 4 drops
- White Fir 2 drops
- Roman Chamomile 3 drops
- Helichrysum 4 drops
Add oils to Epsom Salts and then to warm bath – soak for 25-30 minutes 3 -4 times a week until symptoms get relieved and then once a week to heal skin issues.
Thank you for this post. It was really informative, I have a friend that is considering doterra but only if the oils can help her with her psoriasis on her head. She did try the Clear Skin and it actually made her skin breakout even more and cause her a lot of pain. So I am going to have her try what you mention above along with some LLV.
Thanks Robert! It’s amazing how our bodies can heal themselves once we get them under the ideal conditions. I truly believe that the LLV is the basis for a lot of healing that’s taken place in my own body. I’m thankful that I’ve only suffered with mild psoriasis, but even that has completely disappeared. doTERRA is the bomb!
What is llv? I have Psoriasis on 90% of my body including my face and both my kids have it also. .. Where do we start? !?
Hi Cheryl.
LLV is doTERRA’s Lifelong Vitality pack – it is an excellent “set” of vitamins, minerals, and oils in supplement form. There are three components – Microplex VM (vitamins and minerals), Alpha CRS (for cellular health), and xEO Mega (essential omega oils). I’ve said before in one of my posts that if there was only one product I could buy every month, it would be the LLV pack!
doTERRA stand behind their products 100%, and LLV actually has a money-back guarantee. If you don’t feel better by the end of 30 days, they will refund your money! I’d be happy to talk to you more about them, if you’d like!
I used to suffer from psoriasis for about 15 years so I have tried every single cream & ointment there is. Unfortunately almost every cream had little effect at all but thankfully I was actually able to completely cure my psoriasis after my cousin told me how she cured hers. I only had to do 2 things:
1. Use a humidifier in your house. This will add moisture to the air and to your skin without you knowing.
2. Follow every step in the free video & guide seen at http://curehealthproblem.com/psoriasis
Try those two steps and hopefully you will get as much luck with getting rid of psoriasis as i did. Just remember psoriasis does not have to be a permanent problem, creams may slightly ease symptoms occasionally (as does fish oil capsules) but you really need to tackle the root cause.
How wonderful that you were able to get relief from your psoriasis with these two steps!
I truly believe that what may work for one person may not work for another, and it’s always good for us to keep our options open until we find the right answer for us. I also agree that the root cause must be addressed in order to find relieve from the symptoms of any disease.
