It’s World Breastfeeding Week! Actually, August is National Breastfeeding Month, but we’ll settle for concentrating on just the week for now.
To increase milk supply. Add 15 drops of Fennel essential oil, Basil essential oil, or Geranium essential oil, or 10 drops of Clary Sage to 2T of a carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil. You can apply this topically to breasts and surrounding areas once a day. Drink lots of water, relax, and be patient.
To decrease milk supply. Add 3 – 5 drops of Peppermint essential oil to a cup of warm water with 1t of local honey to make a Peppermint tea. You can either drink the tea, or you may prefer just to apply 3-5 drops of Peppermint essential oil topically with a carrier oil.
Sore nipples. Nursing moms recommend Lavender, Helichrysum, or Roman Chamomile essential oil applied with a carrier oil to ease the soreness. Don’t forget to wash the oil off prior to the next feeding!
Dry, cracked nipples. You can get some relief by using a drop of either Geranium, Myrrh, or Sandalwood essential oil with a carrier, such as Fractionated Coconut Oil.
Bonus!
Both Fennel and Basil are known stimulate the appetite encouraging baby to eat more – great for fussy eaters! Fennel also calms the stomach and aides in digestion, so for babies with gas or digestive issues, the smell coming from your breast might ease some of their gas pains.
Both Fennel and Basil contain progesterone-like properties which help balance hormones.
Note: It’s worth repeating that the use of Peppermint essential oil may decrease milk supply.
