love your skin with essential oilYour skin is the largest organ of your body. It is also the most visible, which makes it extremely vulnerable to outside elements. What can you do to ensure that you give your skin a fighting chance?

The first thing to do is to ensure you take care of your body from the inside out, and that means a good quality vitamin and mineral regime.

If you have specific issues with your skin, keep these five essential oils at hand:

1. Melaleuca (Tea Tree):

  • As effective as benzoyl peroxide for treating acne, but without the side effects (irritation). Also helps to reduce the appearance of acne scars.
  • Provides relief from psoriasis when applied topically.
  • Fights any infection of the skin, because of its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties.
  • Supports faster wound healing.
  • Fights the fungus that causes Athlete’s Foot and any finger- or toe-nail fungus.

2. Geranium:

  • Brings relief from eczema. Apply to the affected area with coconut oil, which is also a great eczema-soother. Remember that sugar, dairy, grains, and soy are all triggers for eczema.
  • Relieves psoriasis through topical application.
  • Helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles by tightening the skin.
  • Prevents bacteria or microbes from developing on wounds, reducing infection.
  • Speeds up blood clotting and coagulation, helping to stop bleeding.
  • Helps scars and stretch marks fade and vanish, due to promoting blood circulation just below the surface of skin.

3. Frankincense:

  • Soothes and heals the skin, and helps scars and stretch marks to fade at a much faster rate.
  • Promotes the healthy regeneration of cells, helping wounds to heal faster.
  • Helps to regenerate healthy skin cells, supporting the healing of psoriasis.
  • Helps to tone and lift the skin, which is great for reducing the appearance of wrinkles!
  • Helps to stop bleeding from wounds and cuts.

4. Cedarwood:

  • Supports normal sebum production. Excess sebum production can cause seborrheic dermatitis and seborrheic eczema.
  • Use as an antiseptic for cuts and grazes.
  • Helps to clear the scalp of dandruff.

5. Lavender:

  • Stimulates the growth of healthy cells, decreasing the severity of psoriasis.
  • Relieves itching.
  • Soothes irritation. For larger areas of skin irritation, consider adding Lavender essential oil to your bath. Mix about 10 drops of Lavender into a cup of Epsom salts, and dissolve as the bath water is running. (The Epsom salts will ensure that the Lavender doesn’t just sit on the surface of the water.)

I also use a blend of essential oils that has been carefully formulated to include essential oils that are beneficial to the skin.  This blend contains Ho Wood, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Litsea, Melaleuca, and black cumin seed.

It comes in a roller bottle, for ease of application, and can be applied to any area of skin, addressing blemishes, itchy scalp, finger- and toe-nail fungus, and many other skin conditions. It can be used neat but is also effective when used with a carrier.

There you have it. There are many other oils that are beneficial for your skin, these are my personal top five!
