Essential oils for headaches – including migraines, tension and stress

I was prompted to write on this topic as we have had a lot of stormy weather recently, and I have a knack of being able to storms, based purely on the level of pain in my head. I know that when I start to feel like my head is in a vise, and someone is turning the screw, it won’t be too long before the heavens open and the thunderboomers start.

Being a human barometer can have its advantages. You don’t have to check WeatherBug to see if there’s a storm coming. You know when to start closing the windows in your house. You know that it’s not a good time to take the dog for a walk, or go on that long bike ride. But the accompanying pain is not something I’d wish on anyone.

vintage ad for headaches and neuralgiaOne theory behind this type of headache is that changes in air pressure cause changes in the oxygen levels in your body, and the blood vessels in your head compensate for those changes by expanding or contracting. This Pubmed study shows that, while there are people who are sensitive to barometric change, there is no significant evidence. I have many friends who will tell you otherwise.

Whether your headache is cluster, sinus, tension, rebound (caused by medication), or migraine, you need relief, and you need that relief as quickly as possible!

The best way that I have found to relieve my headaches, is a blend of essential oils in a rollerball, with a coconut oil carrier. The oils in the blend are:

  • Wintergreen
  • Lavender
  • Peppermint
  • Frankincense
  • Cilantro
  • Roman Chamomile
  • Marjoram
  • Basil
  • Rosemary

This combination contains some of the heavy-hitter oils in the anti-inflammatory category. But if you don’t have this blend, or the oils to make it, I’ve had great results with Peppermint. A couple of drops on the back of your neck will have a cooling, calming effect. My second choice would be Frankincense rubbed on the temples and forehead.
