It can be overwhelming, when faced with so many essential oils to choose from, to know where to start. I’ve put together a list of the oils that I think everyone should have in their first aid arsenal. Of course, your list may look different.
Probably the most widely-used and versatile oil you could ever possess!
Lavender will help to regulate the nervous system, high blood pressure, and blood sugar level.
Use Lavender to help to relieve burns, cuts, bruises and bites. It will aid in the cleaning of wounds, disinfecting as it cleans.
Lavender is great when you have a headache! Just apply it to your temples, or inhale directly from the bottle. The same applies if you’re looking for relief from stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, or insomnia. I always keep a bottle of Lavender by my bed for those times when I have problems sleeping.
Lavender will help with motion sickness, aches and pains, and imbalances in blood sugar and blood pressure.
Tea Tree may be a more familiar name for Melaleuca – they are one and the same, and the go to oil for infections.
Use Melaleuca for cuts, stings, bites, infections, acne, anything fungal (for instance, athlete’s foot, toenail fungus), colds, flu, sore throat and oral infections.
You can add Melaleuca to your shampoo if you have any type of scalp infection. And don’t hesitate to use it in your dog’s shampoo, too!
Not just a breath freshener! Refreshing and invigorating Peppermint contains menthol, which can be both cooling and warming.

Peppermint is versatile in that it can stimulate or calm, depending on the needs of the person using it. It will help you wake up in the morning, and can help to calm a raging sunburn. Be careful though, a small percentage of the population find Peppermint to be extremely hot when used on the skin. If this is the case for you, use a carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil.
Ever wondered why restaurants offer mints as you’re checking out? Peppermint supports the digestive system, so will help to keep indigestion at bay.
Try Peppermint for stomachache, flatulence, headache, sinusitis, colds, motion sickness, and body aches.
Ah! Smell the outback!
It also comes in very handy when your nose is congested! Eucalyptus seems to open the nasal passages to allow for easier breathing. In the case of sinusitis, a steam tent with Eucalyptus will aid in easier breathing and will help to sooth the nasal passages, too.
Eucalyptus can help to support the respiratory system, calm aching joints, soothe a sore throat, purify the air (use a diffuser!), and stimulate all body functions – it’s your let’s get this day started oil!
5. Wild Orange
I love the sweet, warming smell of Wild Orange!

It is especially appealing to children and older people, probably because of the familiarity of the smell.
Use Wild Orange when you’re anxious, depressed, or nervous – it can help turn your day around! Help your child to relax by combining Wild Orange with Lavender for a relaxing massage at bedtime. Dry or mature skin may benefit from an application of Wild Orange, mixed in with your everyday moisturizer.
This one is a splurge oil. It’s not cheap, but it’s incredibly versatile, and I would encourage everyone to experience Frankincense oil.
It is made from the resin of the Boswellia Frereana tree, and though the smell may not exactly be appealing, the benefits are amazing! If you’re looking for the hardest hitting oil for your arsenal, don’t look beyond Frankincense. It has been used successfully in the treatment of cancer and tumors, can assist with dementia and depression, and is a powerhouse when it comes to anything caused by inflammation.
